BASKETBALL PALAU TAKES HUGE STEP FORWARD

At a media conference held in Koror today, Basketball Palau and the Koror State Youth Division announced that the Koror State Hamlet League would be expanded from the former Summer School Holiday Program into a state wide series of leagues to cater for all age groups in both boys and girls divisions.

The age groups will be:

  • 18 years and under
  • 16 years and under
  • 14 years and under
  • 12 years and under
  • 10 years and under

The first age group to commence will be the 14 years and under as this age group shall have the opportunity to be selected into the National 15 years and Under Squad for next year. Other age groups will be played at various times through next year to suit a number of criteria for the future of basketball in Palau.

The KSHL will be conducted with the assistance of the various Hamlet Supervisors. Basketball Palau will assist the staff of the Koror State Youth Division in setting up the schedules and recording results. The training and education learned through the conduct of this expanded KSHL will be of great assistance in developing other competitions within Koror State for other sports.

The Head of the Koror State Youth Division, Ivan Blesam, said he was excited at this new intiative and the

opportunity to create a state wide competition that would allow the youth of Koror State to be identified into

future national programs.

PBF Vice President and NBDO, Topps Sungino, outlined to the attending media and Hamlet Supervisors how the

KSHL will become an important part of Basketball Palau’s NDP. Following each league there will be All Star

Teams selected to participate in a Super League and from the Super League the National Squads will be

selected. These Super Leagues will be held at every age group from the youngest to the senior players.

It is envisaged that the KSHL will become the biggest sports competition in Palau, surpassing the bi-annual

Belau Games, and could involve more that 1,000 participants within the first year.
