NDP FOR 2011-2012

The most exciting part of the NDP to be introduced is the change to the structure of leagues and the introduction of community leagues for youth and junior players. Up to now development of youth and junior players was basically left to chance through the ISL program in conjunction with the Ministry of Education (MOE). Now basketball will be played in all Koror State Hamlets in 4 age groups in 2011 (18 and under, 16 and under, 15 and under and 12 and under) for both males and females. In 2012 the 10 years and under age group will be added.

These community leagues will be conducted by the Youth Division of the Koror State Government with assistance and training by Basketball Palau. The State will be divided into 3 areas of approximately equal population size, and at the end of each league players will be selected into squads, two from each area. A coach shall be selected to each team and the squads will practice under the National Coaches, acting as mentor coaches. From these squads two All Star teams will be selected to compete in a Super League. From the Super Leagues the National Squads will be selected and named.

In 2012 these leagues will also have a State Championship and later it is planned to expand this level of competition to the outer states so that in time National Championships can be held for each age group.

The PBF will also re-structure the NBL, WNBL and ABL to provide more elite competitions for the development of players for future National Teams.

In other exciting news, Basketball Palau will conduct accreditation courses as part of their National Accreditation Scheme (NADS) for Coaches, Referees, Score Table Officials, Statisticians, Administrators, Sports Injury and Presenters.

The new approach to National Squad selections will assist in the formation of each National Squad to fit the age groups for the Micronesian Basketball Confederation (MBC) tournaments to start in 2011. To fit the MBC tournaments the National Squad Program will now include:

  • The National Men’s and Women’s Squads
  • The National Youth Men’s and Women’s Squads (19 Years)
  • The National 17 Years Men’s and Women’s Squads
  • The National 15 Years Men’s and Women’s Squads

Programs for each squad have been periodized to fit the MBC calendar over the next 2 years. The timing of these tournaments will fit with the conduct of the Koror State Hamlet Leagues (KSHL) each year.

With each age group having a Super League, it not only provides an opportunity to select national squads, but also adds another level of competition within the national structure. With the Belau Games being held in July 2011, senior players will have the opportunity to be identified during this competition as well as during the NBL and WNBL. All Star Teams will be selected following the Belau Games and a Super League conducted in September from which the 2012 senior national squads will be selected to prepare for the Micronesian Basketball Tournament (MBT) in 2012 in Guam.
