MICRO GAMES DAY 7

On the back of a big 24 point game by veteran player Connie Comacho,  CNMI gained a finals berth over Palau.  The CNMI offence was dominant against the Palau man to man defence and small CNMI guard Lalaine Pagarao was able to make several drives to the basket in scoring 12 points.  The 3 point shooting by Camacho earned her 5 successful baskets beyond the arc and the Palau defence simply did not contest as hard as it should have.  Lia Rangamar contributed 14 points in the win.  For Palau Carrissa Trolii scored 20 points in a trying effort to get her team up and Coleen Gibbons chipped in with 12, but the other main scorers for Palau went “missing”.  Palau had two chances at the end to at least tie the score but failed to do so and CNMI got up by 3 points, 61-58.

The Guam and RMI women’s game had the expected result with Team Guam moving onto the final with an easy 59  point win (95-34).  For Guam, Kathryn Castro had 17, Brianna Benito 16, Maree Pelkey 16 and Tianna Quichocho had 15.  For the Marshalls, Stacy Lejjena, Leimamo Wase and Trisha Wase all had 8 points.

Kosrae and Pohnpei men had a real battle for the whole game with scores at each break within 3 points.  In the last quarter it was Kosrae who managed the ball much better and hung on to win by 9 points (74-65).  David Taulung (Kosrae) had a huge game scoring 29 points and was assisted by fellow guard Kilafwa Palik with 15.  For Pohnpei their consistent contributors throughout the tournament in Troy Yaingelvo, Cassidy Shoniber and William Hawley were their main scorers.

CNMI tried to give Team Guam a run for their money and managed to keep up with the Guam bench players when they were on court, but the strength of the Guam starters always meant that they would win, however, CNMI pushed them to the end and Guam won by 83-70.

Palau had to win against Chuuk to have a chance to make then semi-finals and this they did with a consistent effort.  While Team Palau never managed to break away completely, they managed to maintain a lead of around 10 points for each of the last 3 quarters.  In the end Palau won by 75-60.

At the end of the men’s rounds Guam finished 1st and Kosrae 2nd.  Pohnpei, RMI and

Palau all finished up on equal points and by the FIBA classification method, Palau went to 3rd, RMI to 4th and Pohnpei to 5th on percentage.  CNMI finished in 6th position and Chuuk 7th.

In today’s games we have CNMI and Chuuk men play at 1.00pm for the right to challenge Pohnpei tomorrow for 5/6th place.  At 3.00pm Guam take on RMI in the first

of the men’s semi-finals.  At 5.00pm the bronze medal game for women will be played between RMI and Palau, while at 7.00pm Kosrae and Palau will do battle in the second men’s semi-final.
