INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT ANNOUNCED
PBF Vice President, Topps Sungino welcomed attendees on behalf of President Frank Kyota. In addition to the local media the conference had representatives from 5 of the Koror State Hamlets and also from Biblical Ministries of Palau.
The International Tournament will feature the National Men’s Team and the FBL All Star Team (a team selected from the local Filipino League) and a team of college and high school students from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who will represent the Biblical Ministries of Palau as the BMP All Stars.
The FBL All Stars recently competed in the Men’s Super League however, on this occasion they have been bolstered by the addition of several players who were not available last time.
The BMP All Stars comprise several 6 feet plus players and are aged from 16 to 22 years of age. The arrive on Thursday to help the local Biblical Ministry people conduct the annual Island Jams Tournaments and are looking forward to competing in the Tournament. They will be coached by long time basketball enthusiast, Ken Keltner, assisted by Jon Shane.
The Super League for Women will comprise the National Women’s Team and two teams selected from the National Youth Squads – Youth Blue and Youth Yellow. The Youth Teams are a mix of boys and girls and will be coached by the National Youth Squad coaches in Ziske Asanuma and Jesse Sumor and also Happy Fritz and Jolene Rafael.
The competitions commence this Saturday 17th with the Super League games at 6.00pm and the International Tournament at 8.00pm. Games will continue on Monday and the double round robin competitions will conclude on the Friday. On Saturday 24th the two top teams in each division will play off for top position.
The concept of conducting these leagues is to provide valuable competition for our National Teams in their preparation for the Micronesian Games commencing on August 1st. Following the completion of these competitions, the National Teams will be announced for the Micro Games and then they shall have the week resting to recover for the Games.
At the conclusion of the conference the basketball skill clinics to be conducted by the Biblical Ministry team were finalized with each of the Hamlets (see separate story).
