ISLAND JAMS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS

In addition to learning some of the skills of basketball, the players also receive some good advice on the skills of life and the Christian way of life.

So far this summer Camps have been held in Ngerbodel on the 3rd

July with 16 teams competing and in Ngiwal on the 10th with 12

teams.  Ages for the Camps are from 8 – 18 years and the

Tournament is played in age divisions.  Both boys and girls

compete.  The final Camp for 2010 will be held at Ngermid on July 24th.  All players receive an Island Jams T-shirt, prizes of

basketballs and food is provided each day.  For all of this each

player contributes $1.

Arriving this week from the USA to assist will be a team of 7 college and high school students, who will be accompanied by Pastor Ken Keltner who is also a basketball coach and another coach in Jon Shane.  These young players and their coaches will also participate in Basketball Palau’s International Tournament commencing this weekend.

During next week the team will also conduct skills clinics in the following Koror State Hamlets for boys and girls aged 8-18 years – Ngermid (Monday), Ngerbeched (Tuesday), Airai (Wednesday), Echang (Thursday) and Ngerchemai (Friday).  These clinics will be held from 10.00am to 12.30pm.

In addition to receiving coaching on basketball, players at the clinics may also receive a new pair of basketball shoes.  Through the generosity of FIBA Oceania, Basketball Palau has received a box of basketball shoes for distribution and through the clinics next week these will be given out to players.

Basketball Palau is fortunate to have the assistance of the Biblical Ministries group in helping us to develop the player’s base through the Island Jams Tournaments.   This work, coupled with the recent visit by the Youth Sports Team, is invaluable to our NDP (National Development Program).

The Camps are facilitated by local Biblical Ministries personnel in John and Jamie Zimmer and Jon and Heather Clapp, as they have done since the inception of the Island Jams.  Sponsor for the events are Jim and Dana Towberman who travel from the USA to Palau each year to help out. Over the years Camps have been held in Ngerbodel  and Ngermid Hamlets in Koror and in Ngiwal, Ngaremlengui and Aimelik States.  So far this summer Camps have been held in Ngerbodel on the 3rd July with 16 teams competing and in Ngiwal on the 10th
