ABL COMMENCES

With 20 teams accepted into the ABL, it is designed to cater for the development of players and teams looking to make the NBL in the future.  In fact for next year’s NBL the top 4 teams from this year’s ABL will qualify along with the top 4 teams from last year’s NBL.

The ABL has also taken a change in player numbers and now follows the FIBA team requirements of 12 players in each team.  In addition non Palauans are restricted to 2 per team.  To cater for expat players who always add to the playing standard, the league also allow 2 teams comprising non Palauans.  The two teams in this year’s league are High Tide (comprising USA nationals) and Jaguars (comprising Filipino nationals).

Basketball Palau has also used the ABL to start its National Registration System and all players are required to complete a player registration form that is attached to the team registration form.  In addition to providing a record of all players, coaches and officials, this information also allows for score sheets to be printed prior to games and along with score summary sheets will allow for top scorers and fouls to be recorded.

Further planning for more competitions, especially for youth, is under way and in 2010 it is hoped to establish competitions that will allow for development and progression for players coming from the young ages up to the NBL.

At present Ka’bong, Breakers and MEDA are leading the ABL ladder, followed closely by Peched and PPR Shark Attack.  The ABL is scheduled to finish in March next and the NBL will commence in April, subject to the refurbishment of the National Gymnasium for the Micronesian Games.
