WU takes FBL title

Western Union showed its hunger for its first title as they defeated last year’s runner-up team Rangers, 75-67 to win the championship crown of the 2009 Filipino Basketball League (FBL) last November 8 at the Palau National gym.

After trailing 25-32 at the end of the first half, Western Union went to the troika of Bong Alambra, Ruben Tecson and rookie sensation Emerson Patenia as they led their team to s scoring frenzy and outscored the Rangers with a 24-18 output to cut the lead at 49-50.

Going to the last canto, Western Union displayed more aggressiveness and determination as Alambra, Tecson and Jun Bautista did much of the damage both in and outside the painted area as they established a 60-52 lead with 5:42 left in the game.

From there, Western Union hanged on with their defense and scored back to any comeback threats of the Rangers and took the win and closed the series with a 2-1 count. Both Patenia and Tecson topscored for Western Union with identical 21 points while Jay Naguit led the Rangers with 17 markers on a losing cause.

In the curtain raiser, Surangel and Sons showed class as they dumped the J-Trading Jaguars, 89-88 to claim third place honors. Arnold Undencimo tallied 30 points for Surangel and Sons as Gener Aguinaldo had 26 for the Jaguars.

FBA president Lucio Bandibas personally handed the trophies to the winners and special awards. Named into the mythical five were Noel Avenido and Jay Naguit of team Rangers, Ruben Tecson and Bong Alambra of Western Union and Arnold Undencimo of Surangel and Sons.

Other awardees were Hanpa Cardinals (sportsmanship award), Phlip Maniago of J-Trading Jaguars (most improved player), Jun Aclan of Western Union (coach of the year), Jun Bautista of Western Union (finals MVP), Bong Alambra of Western Union (regular season MVP), Emerson Patenia of Western Union (rookie of the year), and Jun Bautista of Western Union, Arnold Undencimo of Surangel and Sons and Gener Aguinaldo of J-Trading Jaguars (highest pointers of the league).

The tournament is supervised by the Palau Basketball Federation (PBF) and sponsored by Pinoy Express and Remittance, WCTC, Aqua Water, Print Zone, PITI, Palau Royal Resort, ATT Bar and Restaurant, CTSI Logistics and Shimbros International.
