The American Samoa Basketball Association (ASBA) is doing its best to prepare all of their sports officials and coaches for the upcoming Moso’oi Tournament, to be held at the end of October.

Ending last Friday, a three-day training workshop was held at the American Samoa National Olympics Committee (ASNOC) conference room by sports officials from the ASBA, which included Allen Fuimaono and Paul Puaauli Amituana’i.

Amituana’i and Fuimaono represented American Samoa at the XV Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.

Speaking to Samoa News, Amituana’i said that the purpose of the three day training was for the ASBA to have more Game and Table Officials, and to make sure they got the chance to learn more about the new changes in Rules and Regulations by the FIBA, the international Basketball Federation.

According to an official from ASBA, in order for them to build up the sport of basketball on the island, the local association needs to have more certified Game and Table Officials, and he praised the ASBA for stepping up to develop the sport here.

An official attending the training told Samoa News that these trainings are helpful, and he now understands more about the new rules and regulations set forth by FIBA. It also gives him more understanding about his role as a local referee, he said.

“Another good thing about this training was the help from our local Sports Officials, Fuimaono and Amituana’i, who just returned from the XV Pacific Games with their new experience, and this will help other local sports officials like me to gain more knowledge and skills,” said another participant.

After returning from the Pacific Games in PNG, the ASBA has being working hard to develop their sport in the territory, which included a Summer Basketball Youth Clinic on both the East and West sides, which saw a good number of young people turn up to participate
