The 2014 Flag Day National Championships Tips Off

The American Samoa Basketball Association will be tipping off its annual Flag Day league with the 2014 Flag Day National Championships on April 12th, 2014 at the Tafuna High School gym.

Tip off time will be at 11:30am (AST) after the conclusion of the training of the Under 19 national team. 12 men teams and 5 female teams have signed up to compete in this years league.

For the mens:

  1. Mesepa Sonics (2013 Flag Day Champs)
  2. Ninjaz
  3. Breakers
  4. Iliili
  5. Primetime
  6. Utulei
  7. Army #1
  8. Army #2
  9. Futiga
  10. Tafuna
  11. Under 19 Select Team

For the women's:

  1. Lady Breakers
  2. Nu'uuli
  3. Liona West Ward
  4. CaBoom
  5. Swoosh

This will be the second time the ladies will be participating, a first in the flag day league, since the new administration has taken over in 2013. "The board has really been proactive to bring the women back onto the court. That's why we wanted to waive the entrance fee & try to bring the level of competition back" said ASBA President Milton Taufa'asau.

The Mesepa Sonics are the defending champions from 2013 who have surprised many in last years league by their dominace in the playoffs & upsetting the heavy favorite Ninjaz, who have gone undefeated during the league. After a two year absence from the league, many believed that Mesepa was not the same team that has dominated in the past, however, with a strong prowness and a solid bench, the team pulled together and wound up with the trophy and 2 MVP winners (TJ Leota & Vailili Malaaulu)

The Sonics will start the season, however, without their two main offensive threats of Leota & Malaaulu as they serve a 2 game suspension & fine for their misconduct in the 2013 Moso'oi tournament. It opens the door for the Ninjaz (2013 Moso'oi champions) to take advantage of the situation. Other teams such as the Breakers will also be giving these top teams a run for their money. New teams such as Army & Utulei will be interesting to see at the start of this years league.

The women on the other hand, saw the 2013 Moso'oi league & tournament, reintroducing the women back into the league. It was a huge success that had the Lady Breakers take both tournament & league with undefeated records and MVPs (Annie Mendozza & Daryleen Moi). However, Nu'uuli & Swoosh will look to unseat the Lady Breakers with their uptempo stye of play.

Opening ceremony will be at 11:30am (AST) and will immediately start with 5 games (2 women & 3 men games). The first game will be:

  1. Swoosh vs CaBoom (Women)
  2. Lady Breakers vs Nu'uuli (Women)
  3. Utulei vs Army #1 (Men) (Shield Game)
  4. Iliili vs Primetime (Men)
  5. Futiama vs Army #2 (Men)

All games will be held at the Tafuna high school gym on Mondays, Wednesdays & Saturdays. On Mondays & Wednesdays with a schedule start time of 5:30pm and two games. Saturdays will be at 11am. The President is inviting the public to come out and support the local teams and especially the Under 19 national select team that will be competing as well.
