Only two of the 6 competitors were able to complete the very difficult coconut tree climbing event today to give Jasper Ponapart of Pohnpei and Joseph Roman and good head start in the Micronesian All Around for men.
One of the early favourites, Talley Hairens of Pohnpei just failed to make three climbs despite a very game attempt to overcome the difficult conditions which means that despite his winning both the Coconut Husking and the Spear Throwing event he must settle for third place and 15 points behind the leader, his Pohnpei team mare Jasper Ponapart.
Silver medallist from the 2014 Games, Joseph Roman won the opening climb and looked set to take out the spear throw with a perfect 3 from 3 at the short distance. however he failed to capitalise over the medium and long distance and fiished third. He also struggled to 5th in a very classy field of coconut huskers but despite these setbacks lies just 1 point off first place.
Be sure to come down to the Yap Marina tomorrow morning to take in the action as the men swim and dive for gold.
