In a wet and windy first Sunday of matches for the season, winners were Casey Scorpions, North Ballarat and Sandringham.
Sandringham got over the line in a thriller against Essendon, kicking a behind after the siren to claim a first round win.
North Ballarat recorded its first Round 1 win since 2010 against Collingwood, and Casey Scorpions gave new coach Justin Plapp his first win with a victory over Frankston.

NORTH BALLARAT d COLLINGWOOD
Margin: 35 points
Telling facts: After leading by 11 points at three quarter time, North Ballarat kept Collingwood scoreless in the final term, kickinbg 3.6 to run out 35-point victors. Andrew Hooper made a successful return to the VFL with three goals, with Orren Stephenson dominant in the ruck.

CASEY SCORPIONS d FRANKSTON

Telling facts: After a slow first term, a five goal to one second quarter set up the win for Casey. Accuracy was an issue for the Scorpions though, with their 34 scoring shots only producing 13 goals for the afternoon.

SANDRINGHAM d ESSENDON
Margin: 1 point
Telling facts: A kick for goal after the siren to Yllber Zijai after a free kick gave the Zebras a 1-point win after the Bombers led by 19 points in the final term. See footage below of the final 5 minutes.
