The final round of the Swisse VFL Women’s season could provide an early glimpse of a possible finals matchup, when Melbourne Uni and the Darebin Falcons do battle in a top of the table clash at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. Kate Withers looks at the final round clash.
Rounding out the season proper, second-placed Uni will look to redeem itself after a narrow loss to the Falcons the last time the sides met in Round 8.
A heavily defensive game saw just six goals scored in the Round 8 contest, with Darebin managing four of those in its 12-point win.
The Round 8 clash was also the closest Darebin has come to tasting defeat this season, with the indomitable Falcons attempting to finish the season undefeated.
Uni made light work of Diamond Creek last week, with 10 individual goal scorers helping the side to a 100-point triumph.
Brooke Lochland and Gabriella Pound starred for Uni in the win, while Catherine Phillips and Jessica Anderson contributed three goals each.
Not to be outdone, Darebin mismantled Knox last week, with spearhead Katie Brennan snared nine majors to take her to 74 for the season, while Steph Simpson and Meghan McDonald scored four each. Georgia Holden and Darcy Vescio were productive as per usual, joining Daisy Pearce in the best on ground list.
Alongside Pearce, Karen Paxman and Lauren Arnell have been at the core of the Falcons’ success this season, and will no doubt draw their fair share of attention from Uni this weekend.
For Uni, Ellie Blackburn has been included in the best on ground list 14 times this season for Uni, and was a shining light for the side in its tight loss to the Falcons in Round 8.
