KEEN PRIMARY ATHLETES.
Our long programme last Tuesday (July 14) included events for four age-groups. We started with a road race for under-17s, run on the long Dai Nippon Causeway. Only two girls gave up their sleep to race but completed the course, starting and finishing on the Stadium track. They were followed by a large number of keen Primary athletes who were offered races at 80m. and 400m. (See Results later.)
J.S.S. ATHLETES NOT FORGOTTEN !
Some of the successful young athletes from our three Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) then took part in races over 400m. and 1000m., plus a Standing Broad Jump competition. Several of the stars from the Junior division of the recent Inter-School Championships again featured, e.g. Ms Kaingaue David.
FULL-ish OPEN PROGRAMME !
Having satisfied the needs and aspirations of the younger athletes, we then started a longer, more comprehensive programme for the older athletes. There was no High Jump this time, and we substituted Standing Triple Jump and Reverse Overhead Throw for TJ and Shot. We included LJ and Javelin. On the track we had all events up to 3000m., plus 60m. (4 flights !) Hurdles. At the end we had both Short (100/100/200/400) and Long (200/200/400/800) Mixed Medley Relays.
GETTING TOGETHER !
Apart from the keen competition, one of the best things about the Open programme was the sporting and supportive way the athletes related to each other, with the Inter-School loyalties left behind last week. This was very encouraging and was cemented by the various combinations of high-class athletes which contested the two Relays.
