Arrival.
OAA Executive Director Yvonne Mullins and her colleague, OAA Project Manager Sarah Runzheimer, arrived on Tarawa on May 25. Sarah had come to check on the Australian Government-funded KAA project, the Pacific Sports Partnership (PSP), which has given support for the use of sports in Community Development (reported elsewhere earlier). Among other Government officials Yvonne and Sarah met were the Vice-President Kourabi Nenem (formerly a leading Volleyball coach and administrator), and the Minister for Women, Youth and Social Affairs - including Sport - David Collins (an ex-international athlete). Courses.
Apart from that and the courtesy of the visit, another of their purposes was to oversee and assist the KAA Secretary, Tekabara Raurenti (see image from 2016), to administer two in-country courses. The first of these was for IAAF TOECS Level 1 (for Technical Officials) and this was presented by Yvonne. Six people completed the course. These were Tenoa Betene, Pikia Bira, Arobati Teewe, Samasoni Nakala, Turei Banimone, and Nei Kairao Tune. (Image of Samasoni at his school (JSS TUC2) in February 2016.)
The second course for CECS Level 1 (for Coaches) was attended by 22 people. This was presented by Sarah and Tekabara, assisted by Coach Brian Fukuyama. They were supported by key members of the KAA Executive. These courses cost nearly AU$6000 to stage but resulted in many qualified offiicials and coaches: this is much more effective than sending just one or two off-shore to study in Australia. The two courses were part of the PSP project and were funded through it.
