POLYNESIAN STAR !
Our young lady from Tahiti (at school here) again proved that she is a quality sprinter, although only 14. Kaminihi Palmer, born in Tahiti, won the G80 and G300 on Day 2 of the WAD in Kiribati. She was joined as a competitor by 16 other girls and 23 boys for this "Schools" age-group competition, for those born in 1993, 1994, 1995.
All the Tarawa Secondary schools with students in this age-group were represented, a total of five schools.
As happened last week, on Day 1, most of the KAA Committee gave their time and assistance in officiating. Again we had the willing help of Nei (Miss) Kaitinano, Rabangaki, Tekooki and David Birati as current athletes. As a result, the programme was completed and prizes distributed and photos taken so that we could have the "officials'" lunch by noon !
EVENTS.
We went ahead with the planned events, i.e. 80m., 300m., 1000m., Shot, and Long Jump. With showers around, we were lucky with the weather and had no interruptions.
The atmosphere was friendly and competitive, and the absence of a booming "musical" P.A. assisted communication. Instead we had to share the output from the sound system being rented by the Volleyball Association on the same site !
SPECTATORS.
For a while we had a football squad as noisy and interested spectators, but they only really wanted track events ! Nevertheless the athletes were encouraged by the others from their own schools.
RESULTS.
