FIRMAMENT of STARS !
As with any such competition, especially spread over two days, a number of the better athletes participated in several events each. Sprinter Terina (Open Girls) won 100, 200 and all three jumps. Banrenga (Open Girls) predictably won 400, 800, 1500, and 3000. She also tried HJ - which she cannot do ! - with damaging consequences to her foot ! These two and 13 other girls will comprise the Open squad.
Fortunately for us, there are others emerging, e.g. in the Inter. Girls, Karoteeta winner of 800/ 1500; Ngereata winner of 100, 200, and 400; Beiauea the TJ winner and four other podium finishes; Ioanna the 3000 winner and twice a runner -up; these and 14 others will be the Inter. squad.
BIGGER NUMBERS of BOYS !
The Open squad of 21 includes sprinter Tanroo (winner of 100/200); Taeateiti winner of LJ and TJ; Mwatiota a determined 400 winner; Taom showing his versatility by winning the Shot plus 2nd. in TJ and Discus.
There will also be 21 Inter. Boys. (Born in 1991 or later.) The star of the Inter-Team was Tonika, but he will have to move up to the Open ranks for the Inter-School. Derin (winner of 800/1500/and 3000) is a find, supported by Bakarawa (second in 800 and equal winner of 1500 and 3000). We knew about Rhynner from last year's Inter-School - and he won the LJ and placed 2nd. in TJ.
BANKING ON MINOR POINTS.
It may be a false assumption, but it looks (from the performances) as if we will be successful again only if our few real stars perform with stamina and persistent determination. We should have enough strength in depth to feature in all the Relays. But final victory will probably be down to those team-members who pick up the odd 5 or 7 points for the minor placings. Such is the route to TEAM success.
WINNERS.
These will be presented event by event, track first, showing the winners in order of IG, OG, IB, OB. The approx. age-groups were Intermediate = F4 and F5; Open = F6 and F7.
