EXPLOSIVELY ENDOWED !
Appearing almost from nowhere this morning was the current holder of the Mens National Record for Hammer Throw (and IB Championships Record for Shot !) He is Junior (Tunia) Kaotirake. Born in 1988, he is able to generate explosive speed over a short distance - or at least, he was ! He is an international silver medallist on throws.
He has been on an outer island but is now back living with his family on Tarawa. He is keen to start training again, especially on Javelin and Hammer.
DISCOVERING THE VORTEX !
This morning I introduced him to our recently-acquired Vortex. Because it is so light, he needed to keep his technique quite accurate, but after a few experiments he was able to produce the prolonged whistle which indicates that it is on line and travelling a long way ! So he was throwing 50 - 60m. with fair technique and relatively little effort.
Then he reverted to Javelin. The throwing was OK, but he needs to work (again !) on his approach run, with discipline. Also he is now throwing the 800gm. implement.
We hope he stays around and maintains regular training.
