EXHAUSTION IS A LIMITER !
We launched into Hammer Throwing with great enthusiasm in 2004 and 2005. Then the interest (male and female) waned, partly because no-one took over from the pioneers ! Now the Hammer is back and we have several male athletes who have taken up the challenge of the most complex throwing technique.
David Tetau is 31, strong and compact, i.e. not too tall. He has grasped the technique very rapidly, his main problem being a forward lean at the end of each turn. We have not rushed him, but he has wanted to learn the turns and has thrown fairly successfully and consistently off two. His best distance (with the 5K. for learning) is over 37m. This is comparable with our 2004 throwers. If we can get him to maintain stability, 40m. with the 5K. and probably 35m. with the senior is possible this year. (NR is 30.90m. from 2005.)
This morning David did a throwing session but had to stop when tiredness caused him to lose his timing and land the hammer on top of the Soccer goal ! (In the past, on a different field, we had to rescue a hammer from a coconut tree !)
