ICECREAMIFIED !!
With nine of the Athletics group having some attachment to St. Louis High School in Tarawa, and Marist Brother Kalolo Hunt having been our Principal last year (until serious illness took him prematurely to New Zealand), it was only natural that we should be offered some Marist hospitality in Apia !
Thus it was after Mass at the RC Cathedral this morning that we confirmed the invitation and arrangements. Two Marist pick-ups collected us from the "Village" and took us to the Hunt house ! An excellent lunch, including large helpings of ice-cream and banana cake, was not followed by sleeping (as it would be in Kiribati !)
SLIDING ROCKS ! (Papasee'a.)
This was activity not to be seen in Kiribati ! A river had cut itself a valley including waterfalls and cascades, the water in some places running over exposed slabs on a great angle to produce a natural slide. There was no daring or betting but plenty of amazed encouragement when your Editor ventured down the upper slide (twice) forwards, and the lower one backwards. The hardest part was not travelling some ten metres downstream ! It was trying to hoist the body back up to civilisation ! (I counted more than 130 steps !)
It was a popular place and we met up with the rest of the Kiribati party also having fun, splashing around, taking photos, and having a piece of real active relaxation !
Having had more snacks at the top of the steps, we were driven up to the main Catholic Retreat House for more photos and excellent views over Apia. Then down the mountain (none in Kiribati) for MORE ICE-CREAM !!
Training starts on Tuesday night !!! (The M.A.C. in Guam is only three months away !)
