EMERGENCE CONTINUES !
The afternoon session of Day 2. was unhindered by Wrestling, Football, Dogs, etc. It again showed the emergence of some young talent, e.g. the first two in the M3000m. at the end of the programme. Both Ngaebi and Rongoona have been training for more than three years and now are showing the benefit of all those sweaty hours ! Also new girls like Teina and Mareta.
RESULTS SUMMARY.
To make life a little easier for the distance runners, we opened with 800m. races. True to form, Banrenga won the W800 in 3-02.7, from Teina in 3-10.4. In the M800, a tactical race produced a slow time but four involved in a tight finish. 1000m. winner Taburenga won in 2-32.1, from the fast-finishing Utimawa in 2-33.6.
Then the sprinters raced 200m. Two excellent races resulted in wins for Kaitinano (29.1) over Lilly (29.5), and for Rabangaki (24.5) over Itinnaibo (Tim) in the same time.
With one technically OK Javelin throw out of three, Mareta proved that training was not completely wasted by winning with 23.66m., from Kaitinano (not yet back to her best) with 23.40m. Terina improved her PB to 22.17m. in third. The MJavelin was overshadowed by Rabangaki, still inconsistent but managing 48.70m. to win from a field of 14 throwers ! Takakia was competitive with 43.65m. and Taom took third place with a 40-breaking PB of 40.75m. There were many "new faces" just "having a go" and hopefully they will return and practice seriously. One "old face" was Kourabi Nenem, ex-schoolboy medallist in an earlier Fiji Coca Cola Games. He still threw 35.03m. with no recent training !
Kaitinano beat seven others in the WLong Jump with 4.50m. to win from Lilly (4.37m.) and Terina (4.32m.) Ioritana took a big scalp when he beat Rabangaki in the MLong Jump, with 6.17m. to 6.15m. Itinnaibo was third. Six jumped.
The final event was over 3000m. in the evening sunlight. (See photos.) Banrenga won her third first prize with victory in the W3000m. in 13-28.3, over Teetang in 13-47.3. The M3000 provided Rongoona Selivale with a sweaty end to the day and a fair time of 11-47.1. Ngaebi (12-10.8) and Teetu (12-40.8) were second and third.
THANKS !
As before, thanks to the Independence Sports Sub-Committee for providing the opportunity and Telecom Authority of Kiribati (T.A.K.) for providing the sponsorship. Finally thanks to the athletes and officials, especially the less-experienced athletes who, even if they did not win prizes, hopefully see a point to their future training !
