Big time commitment !
KAA President, Peter Birati (see image), and young male sprinter Kimwauau Makin (see image) had to leave yesterday (August 10th.) and fly to Nadi then Suva in Fiji for a six day stop-over. They will leave Suva - Nadi next Monday (August 17th.) and arrive via Hong Kong in Beijing that evening. The Congress starts next day and will be attended by Peter as the Kiribati Delegate. The actual competition starts on Saturday (August 22nd.) They will not be back home until Thursday, Sept. 3rd.
This gives some idea of the time commitment required to attend such competitions by people who live in remote locations !
Kimwaua background.
Kimwaua Makin, who had his 18th. birthday last Saturday, is a male sprinter who has been developing his talents with Kiribati AA and his school. At the end of last year, in the annual KAA National Championships, he won the M200m. (24.9) and was close runner-up in the M100m. (12.1) These times may not seem fast but on a coral sand track they are fast enough !
Kimwaua was another of those considered for selection for the team to the OAA Championships in Cairns in May. It reflects his character that he chose to stay and do his important school work instead !
RESULT to follow.
