GRAND PRIX NEWS.
The last up-date from OAA before the I-Kiribati party for the Grand Prix departed on Air Pacific today (Dec. 5th.) informed us about the changes to the Fiji part of the programme, necessitated by the current political uncertainty in Suva. Thus everyone will now stay in Nadi, at the western end of Viti Levu (main island) and as far as possible from Suva !
The Fiji part of the Grand Prix programme will now take place at Ba (on the north coast) at Xavier College on Saturday Dec. 9th., followed by a rest day on Sunday, then a second meeting at the Lawaqa Fiji Sports Council Grounds at Sigatoka (on the south coast) on Monday, Dec. 11th. There will be an extra meeting in Apia Park, Apia, Samoa, on Tuesday Dec. 12th. after the athletes arrive there. Then they will join their National teams for the Championships.
The KAA party is due to leave Tarawa on Air Pacific at 1610 today. This consists of Rianimarewe Betero (one of the GP Squad coaches), plus male athletes Beteru Ateri (Hurdles), Tekooki Teieka (Middle Distance), and youth-age Tanroo Taniera (Sprints). They were last seen on the back of a truck heading for the airport ! In Nadi, they will be joined by Harry Highland (Jumps) coming from his scholarship training programme in New Zealand.
MAIN TEAM for the CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The main KAA team (8 more athletes and two more coaches) is due to leave Tarawa on Air Pacific on Thursday, Dec. 7th. We are still waiting for two more tickets, but we are hopeful !
To wish ourselves well for the trip, we met for supper Hawaiian-style last night (new place, very cheap !) and up-dated everyone with the latest news. We are used to sagas; I wonder where this one will lead ?!
