RUSILA STEPS UP.
In the absence overseas of the KAA Secretary, Arobati Brechtefeld, it fell to Ms. Rusila Mwea, the Treasurer of KAA, to organise the two World Athletics Days in Kiribati this year. It helped that Ms. Yvonne Mullins (Executive Director of Oceania AA) timed her visit to Kiribati to be able to assist on the second day and with Road Races held in the same period.
"SCHOOLS'" COMPETITION.
The first WAD was held on Saturday, May 12th. in the National Stadium in Bairiki, Tarawa Island. It was a Team competition for School teams of athletes born in 1997, 1998, or 1999. This was the first time such a Team competition has been incorporated in a WAD in Kiribati.
Four School teams participated and the final results were:-
Boys. 1. Moroni High School. 180 pts. 2. St. Louis H.S. 120. 3. Betio Junior Sec.Sch. 102.
Girls. 1. Moroni HS. 154 pts. 2. St. Louis HS. 102. 3. Betio JSS. 76.
It is no surprise that these schools were successful since MHS and SLHS have been two of the most successful Senior High Schools in recent years, while Betio JSS has been the best JSS.
"CLUBS'" COMPETITION.
The second WAD was staged on Saturday, May 19th., with the assistance of Ms. Yvonne Mullins and another visitor, Mr. Lars Hansen from Fiji. This was the "Clubs'" competition for older individuals born in 1995 or 1996. A total of ten events were held for both boys and girls. The main featuring athletes were John Ruka who did the boys' sprint double, Ms. Kaingaue David who did the same in the girls' events, Itaaka Temaka who won the boys' Discus, and Terubetaake Birati with a girls' middle-distance double. Among the boys' winners was Tebwao Tekiau (in the 1500m.) who later went to the Oceania AA under-20 Championships in Cairns.
Subsequently, the names of all winners were submitted in a report to IAAF. Their names were included in a draw to travel to the IAAF Centenary Gala in Barcelona in November. (This type of reward is always offered by IAAF following WAD.) See later story about Teebwaki KENNETH.
