KAINGAUE does P.B.
Kaingaue David competed in Heat 1 (of four Heats) on Day 1 of the Olympic Athletics programme (Aug. 3rd.) She had a good start in 0.169 (the second fastest in her Heat) and then fell further and further behind the rest of the field to finish 8th. of the eight runners. Nevertheless she ran a Personal Best (PB) of 13.61. (The wind indicated was +0.9.) This ranked her 29/33 overall and 8/9 of the Oceania women. (Images of her enjoying the Welcome Party, then of her start and finish).
NOOA matches Kaingaue's P.B.
Nooa Takooa ran in Heat 4 (of four Heats) on Day 2 of the Athletics (Aug. 4th.) Having set up his blocks, he prepared very well and looked confident and focussed. Again he had an excellent start in 0.155 (also the second fastest in his Heat). He finished 7th. of the eight runners in a PB of 11.53. (Wind +0.5) He was ranked 25/29 overall and 6th. of the nine Oceania men. (Images of him at the Party and of his start.)
AMAZING STAGING !
Lord Sebastian Coe has said that he wants the 2012 Olympics remembered for being a time when "We did it RIGHT !" The fact is that, at 10.00 in the morning, for the Heats of some events, the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium was full and the noise generated by that audience was something in its volume and intensity that these two athletes will never experience again ! The other impressive aspect of the Athletics was the smoothness and efficiency of the organisation and the usual British continuity of the action. Such professionalism of the organisation and interest of the spectators was typical of all the venues being used for the Olympics.
WHO WILL TARGET GLASGOW 2014 ?
In 2014 the Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, UK. Kiribati Athletics will need to prepare suitable athletes, ideally from the Field events (jumps and throws), to justify their selection and travel to compete in Glasgow.
