A clear full moon last night and a clear sky at dawn today heralded another glorious blue-sky, green-sea day in the Pacific ! My camera flash illuminated the darkness of the hospital grounds at the start of the Half-Marathon at 06.15 a.m.. Three male athletes did their one circuit of the hospital then onto the Main Road. (There's little traffic on a Sunday morning !) The road was littered in places with pieces of reef rubble and sand, from the high tide, but not as big a problem as yesterday !
I went ahead and exactly 42 minutes later started the 10K. group, three males and three females. Some water was left at the Gas Station (10K. start) and, as I drove to the Stadium, at a helpful store about 5K. from the finish.
The times were slow, compared with previous years - an indication of the relative lack of distance training being done at the moment.
Thus I had time to get to the Stadium, where Tierata and Rianimarewe were waiting, and set up a Y-finish with hurdles and bunting well before the first arrival, one of the male 10K. runners.
Twenty minutes later, the last finisher crossed the mouth of the Y. More water greeted the not-too-tired runners at the Stadium flag-pole finish. Then followed a presentation of prizes and Participation Certificates. All was finished by 08.30 a.m. One thing missing by doing it early enough to be cool - no audience to applaud their efforts ! You can't have everything !
