When is a pig not a pig ? When it is a method of psycho-analysis ! Or so we discovered from the lady representative from Tahiti !
To put on our serious face for a moment, a large amount of information was given to us in the space of three days spent at the Tanoa International Hotel (definitely Quality without a capital K) in Nadi, Fiji, from April 22-24. This bi-ennial OAA event brought together Athletics administrators from all 19 OAA member federations, a 100% attendance which will hopefully (and is planned to) be matched in Marrakesh, Morocco, in July at the World Youth Championships.
One advantage of being there was to meet and exchange thoughts, problems and solutions with Mr. Jee Isram from the Member Services Dept. of the IAAF. He found time to meet each MF and will try to sort out any difficulties explained to him. At departure time, his gifts included a sulu (the fitting of which again involved the lady from Tahiti !), the makings of a kava evening, and five hours delay at the airport !
There were comprehensive descriptions of the history and current state of the HPTC and RDC.
Other acronyms elaborately defined were OSIC, OBAS,and OTOS (to which an Australian member took a great dislike !)
Our federation was represented by the Secretary, Mr. David Little, and the Assistant Secretary, Mr. Tierata Taukaban. The former stimulated discussion on the third day by pointing out various problems with regulations, IAAF rules and ceremonies which had occurred at the OAA Championships in Townsville in December 2004. Sub-Regional workshops held later came up with some answers for future Championships.
Other presentations, mostly slickly and enthusiastically delivered, included various reports, future planning, OAA Constitutional changes, information about IAAF competitions this year, and an explanation about the priorities which should be applied when selecting teams to travel overseas.
The last night, at the Piranha, saw Bill being presented with a "fly-whisk" by Samoa, which cleverly flew through the air (having hit a fan) and nearly gave the New Zealand CEO his hair (or Scarborough Fair) back !
We look forward to making the acquaintance of more new friends in Palau in July. Thanks OAA.
