Their travel is the culmination of a lengthy process which was drawn out as a result of the Covid19 situation and its knock on effect on visa and travel arrangements. Athletics PNG extended its thanks on behalf of the Athletes to Air Niugini for a 50% discount on the fare to Brisbane for the four athletes and to the Consular Section of the US Embassy for its understanding and assistance with the visa process at this time. APNG is mindful of the situation in the USA with Covid19 and has provided the athletes with relevant advice and information on this matter. They will be following the strict health and safety protocols set by the school and their coaches.
Athletics PNG President Tony Green said that the Junior College option is a good route for many athletes as the costs involved are very modest and with four athletes going to the same school this enables significant savings to be made on the cost of accommodation and meals. 2015 Pacific Games Decathlon Gold Medallist Robson Yinambe and 4*100m relay Gold medallist Wesley Logorava both attended Cloud in 2017-2018 and Athletics PNG has maintained the relationship with the coaches there. Commenting on the athletes travel at this time President Green said that it had been quite a challenge negotiating the travel restrictions and limited flight options at this time. “However with so few international competitions being possible in the Oceania region for the foreseeable future then Athletics PNG is happy that some of its athletes will be able to maintain a high level of training and competition which will prepare them well for the big competitions in the summer of 2022 and 2023.
