As a member of our athletics family, our thoughts and prayers are with Raphaela and especially Debbie as they deal with the pain and suffering that this has caused.Debbie is an inspiring young lady with so much sporting talent and has contributed greatly to the sporting community in PNG. It is therefore very sad that violence against women has reared its ugly head again to someone so close to our sport and a wonderful friend to many of our own athletes.
Athletics PNG does not condone any form of violence toward women in our sport or society. If any female in athletics is experiencing this behaviour, please we urge you to reach out to your coach or one of the Executive Members of APNG who may be able to help you and prevent something terrible happening.
Athletics PNG calls on all fellow sporting bodies nationwide to join hands in curbing gender based violence. We believe the time has come to tackle this issue head on and support Prime Minister James Marape’s call to respect our women folk and for our brothers and sons to exercise restraint, regardless of the circumstances leading up. Enough is enough.
