Five PNG athletes competed in Canberra last Saturday in very cold conditions including Toea Wisil and Mowen Boino. Wisil clocked a time of 11.48 seconds in the 100m in placing second behind Melissa Breen (11.40). Wisil's aim was to get back into race mode and have a hard hit out against Breen , and the pair will meet again this coming weekend in Townsville. Boino clocked a time of 52.52secs but was disqualified for stepping on the line on his inside. Eighteen year old Ephraim Lerkin clocked a time of 54.23secs in the 400m hurdles whereas Nazmie Lee Marai ran a personal best 10.93sec in the heats of the 100m and won the 200m in 22.26. With a compressed programme Marai found the three races in the space of two hours quite a challenge but he and Lerkin can now look forward to running in a more familiar climate in Townsville. Miriam Peni also made the trip to Canberra and clocked times of 12.69secs and 25.85secs respectively. Wisil , Peni , Lerkin and Marai will all be in action again this weekend at an All Comers Meet being held in conjunction with the North Queensland Student Games.
