The value of photo finish was highlighted at the PNG Games on Thursday last week as East New Britain and Morobe battled for the gold medal in the womens 4*100m relay, VenessaWaro led at the last exchange for Morobe but was closed down by a faster finishing Donna Koniel of East New Britain. Examination of the finish line photograph showed that Koniel breasted the tape just four one thousandths of a second ahead of Waro with the time of 50.375 seconds to 50.379.
International Technical Official Barry Mullins confirmed the decision of chief photo finish judge George Moramoro and ENB were declared the winners. Moramoro is gaining experience in the use of the photo finish equipment which was purchased by the East New Britain Host organising Committee for the 2012 PNG Games and has already used it at several national and regional championships. Moramoro works alongside Athletics PNG Development Officer Monica Henao who manages the computerised entries and results system known as Meet Manager.
Athletics PNG President Tony Green commended the work of the pair which has made an enormous difference to the running of Athletics Competitions in PNG. “These systems are linked and enable us to get start lists and results out quickly and keep the meet running on time” he said. “ It would be very difficult to run a Meet like the PNG Games with 800 athletes using manual systems”.
