PNG’s Sharon Toako won the Javelin competition at the Junior College National championships in Mesa, Arizona last weekend with a throw of 42.33m. Toako, from Pomio, ENB is in the USA under the go for Gold Programme to prepare for the 2015 Pacific Games and was one of six PNG athletes representing Northern Iowa Area Community College at the Championships. She went into the Championships as the number one ranked javelin thrower in 2014 junior college competition and improved her personal best of 41.87m set at the Regional Championships in Iowa earlier this month. In congratulating Toako, Athletics PNG President Tony Green said that it was a major achievement to win the national junior college championships.
Theo Piniau also performed with distinction .setting a huge personal best of 47.68 secs in the mens 400m. However it was a measure of the high standard at the Championships that this was only good enough for 17th place overall, with the slowest qualifier for the final running 46.99 secs. Adrine Monagi was also in great form finishing in 6th place in the heptathlon with 4274 points in what was only her second heptathlon competition. Rellie Kaputin who injured herself at the end of a great indoor season earlier this year was unable to reproduce the same form which saw her produce a string of personal bests in February. Her lack of competition outdoors showed as she struggled in the long and triple jumps before bowing out of the high jump with the bar at 1.61m after a very good first time clearance at the opening height of 1.56. The athletes will all return home at the end of May in time for the PNG National Championships in Kokopo from June 6 to 9.
