Athletics PNG is embarking on a major talent hunt for athletes in the jumps and throws in order to boost its representation in these events at the 2015 Pacific Games. Clinics will be held in Port Moresby , Lae , Mt Hagen and Kokopo over a two week period commencing Tuesday 26 November. An invitation has gone out to all sporting bodies for their players to “come and try” one or more of the events on offer. We are looking for “ready made sportsmen and women” said APNG President Tony Green. We are targeting athletes in other sports who will not be part of the Pacific Games team in their chosen sport. Athletics can offer those individuals with the right characteristics and skills the enormous privilege of being part of a home Pacific Games, an opportunity that comes only once in a lifetime. “
Three coaches will come from Brisbane and one from Fiji to conduct testing on participants and to demonstrate the techniques involved. The testing will be designed to determine the individual’s suitability for a particular event. Throws coach Max Volau and his daughter Keisha will conduct the programme for Hammer and Discus throws whilst James Goulding from Fiji will take Javelin and Shot Put. Philip Newton from Brisbane will conduct the testing for jumping events, including Pole Vault Green stressed that due to the timeframe , Athletics PNG is targeting athletes who already have a training background and are physically ready to take up the necessary training and skills development in the time available. It is most unlikely that high school students will be able to develop to the performance level required in just 18 months, especially in the throwing events.
Individuals who wish to take part in the programme are required to register in advance through the following individuals: Port Moresby Peter Chalapan at PNG Sports Foundation; Lae Vincent Onnevagi at PNG Sports Foundation or Philip Rehder; Mt Hagen Philip Kamane 72620907; Kokopo Subul Babo 71066060
