The PNG team to the Pacific Mini Games left for Wallis and
Futuna today without National 400m record holder and
reigning Pacific Games Champion Nelson Stone who was ruled
out at the eleventh hour on medical grounds. “Nelson
sustained an injury to his right hamstring in training three
weeks ago and there has been insufficient time for it to
heal” said Athletics PNG President Tony Green. Stone had a
hamstring scare on his left leg before the Olympic Games in
London last year but was able to manage that and produced a
top performance at the Games, running 46.71 seconds.
PNG however has no shortage of good 400m runners and will be
represented in Wallis by Theo Piniau , Kevin Kapmatana and
new kid on the block Kaminiel Matlaun. The trio all hail
from East New Britain and with both Paul Pokana and Mowen
Boino also in Wallis , the PNG mens 4*400m relay will be a
force to be reckoned with.
