A packed schedule of activities is in store for athletes, coaches and technical officials attending the forthcoming PNG Games Track and Field Athletics competition .The New Guinea Island Regional Shampionships will be held in East New Britain on the weekend of 17 and 18 November, presenting a great opportunity for athletes and officials to have a trial run before the track and field component of the PNG Games kicks off the following weekend. Although it is an NGI Championships, the event will be open to any visiting athletes who wish to take part. An Oceania Athletics Basic Coaching Course will be conducted over three days from November 20 to 22 and an Oceania Athletics technical officials course held over the period November 23 to 25. During the week commencing 19 November a number of clinics will also be conducted for field events with the invitation going out to all interested sportsmen and women to test their skills.
PNG Olympic Committee Secretary General Auvita Rapilla commented recently that Athletics presents a great opportunity to sportsmen and women who don’t make the national team in their first choice sport to represent PNG at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby. Rapilla has made it clear to Athletics PNG that she wants to see the country well represented in all the jumps and throws come 2015. Hence Athletics PNG will be conducting clinics in all the throwing and jumping events in Kokopo during the PNG Games and will be particularly interested to see softballers , rugby players and volleyballers trying the throws; and players from sports like netball and basketball trying the jumps.
A visiting coach from overseas will be on hand to conduct the throws clinics with assistance from local coaches. Several local coaches will be on hand to conduct the clinics in the jumps and hurdles. Following the Games itself athletics PNG will stage a training camp for its development squad.
