The inaugural Crayfish Derby held on 3rd January commenced at 1.30pm with games on the east lawn for the young, old and those in-between from QLYC and QCYC with an egg and spoon race, quoits, knot tying and longest throw of a rope.
Everyone then headed to the dinghy ramp to watch a life raft, kindly donated by Sam Davis, inflated in the water. The young boys from Bolero and French Connection were very quick to jump into the water and found out how difficult it is to climb inside.
On the water in front of the clubhouse the youngsters got out in the Sparrows, donated by QLYC, for a quick race. Next, QLYC Commodore Geoffrey Matthews and Treasurer Peter Curtis raced against QCYC Commodore Lee Renfree and Vice Commodore Alan Farman. It was very obvious from the start that the QLYC competitors had plenty of experience in the small sailing boats. Both Lee and Alan managed to capsize their boats and Alan spent a fair amount of time caught up in the pile moorings. Although QLYC easily won the race, the QCYC competitors showed great grit, determination and a wonderful sense of humour and the spectators thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment.
The inaugural Crayfish Derby trophy was presented to Commodore Geoffrey Matthews, QLYC. The trophy (donated by QCYC Club Captain, Mike Phelan) is a 150 year old glass torpedo bottle which Mike found when diving in the Rip.
Nick Woodley (Blaise Pascal) was the lucky raffle winner of a $200 voucher for White’s Fisheries in Drysdale.
A huge thank you to Mike for organising the event and for very generously donating the trophy and the raffle voucher.
