DAY TWO ROUNDUP

A determined New Brunswick team nearly derailed Nova Scotia’s hopes at the Canadian under-17 boys’ basketball championship at the Homburg Centre in Halifax on Tuesday.

The host team had a healthy lead at the half but New Brunswick stole momentum late and forced overtime. Nova Scotia regrouped in extra time for a 106-97 win to secure their position in the quarter-finals.

Nate Darling was Nova Scotia’s offensive catalyst for a second straight game. He scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Chase Tynes added 22 points and 10 rebounds, Rowan Power netted 20 and Alex Carson had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Nova Scotia will face Newfoundland at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Ontario 77, Manitoba 64: 

Manitoba is a very well coached team and plays the game with thoroughness, poise and intelligence. They hung around throughout, but Ontario`s skill and athletic talent just wore them down.

Ontario is solid. R.J Barrett's control, intelligence, skill and athletically ability allowed him to dictate the entire game. Barrett displayed the perfect balance of getting his teammates involved and making timely shots when needed. 

Ontario defeated Manitoba to obtain the #1 seed for the playoff round.

R.J. Barrett connected for 32 points for Ontario.

Quebec 70, Saskatchewan 63: Bahaide Haidara’s 13 points led Quebec, which had 10 different players make it onto the score sheet.

Newfoundland 64, British Columbia 54: Nathan Barker scored 15 points and collected 8 rebounds in the win. BC's Noah Charles had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The host team also needed a late push to lock down its win.

Mahamed Abukar scored 23 points for Nova Scotia in a 76-65 decision over Manitoba.

Demeric Mercer added 18 points for Nova Scotia and Dondre Reddick had 12. Kyle Filewich was Manitoba’s top scorer with 16.

Nova Scotia will open the playoff round against Saskatchewan on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m.

Ontario 68, Quebec 61: Emanuel Miller hit for 13 points for Ontario.

Saskatchewan 75, British Columbia 62: Alexander Dewar paced Saskatchewan’s decisive showing with 30 points.

New Brunswick 72, Alberta 56: Adam Lambert led the way with 21 points. Alex Jap had a team-high 14 points for Alberta.
