Nova Scotia wanted a tough test to open the Canadian under-17 boys’ basketball tournament on Monday and that’s what they got.

The Bluenose entry ran with a powerful Ontario squad for the first half, but lost 98-76 before a packed house at Saint Mary’s in the first game for both teams.

R.J. Barrett had 23 points to lead Ontario, seeded second behind Manitoba.

Lloyd Pandi added 19, Keshaun Saunders 17 and Anthony McNish 15 for the winners.

Nate Darling hooped 34 points for Nova Scotia, down 53-45 at the half. Alex Carson contributed 15.

The key for Nova Scotia will be to put the first loss in the past.

Newfoundland and Labrador 69, Alberta 65: Nathan Barker had 24 points and 11 boards to power the winners.

Marko Zivac had 20 points for Alberta. 

Saskatchewan 81, P.E.I. 39: Savion Tyson had 16 and Emmanuel Akintunde 15 in the win. Ben Hillis contributed four points and 10 assists.

Cameron Paynter had 13 points for the Island squad.

Manitoba 97, New Brunswick 83: James Wagner had 21 and Mason Foreman 19 as top-seeded Manitoba won its opener.

Lyeu Titarenko had 17, Seongwoo Park 16 and Jack Tilley 14 for New Brunswick.

Quebec 93, P.E.I. 62: Glody Kavadioko had 14 and Anthony Fisiru 13 as Quebec opened with the a win.

Ethan Craig had 15 as P.E.I. lost its second game.

B.C. 91, Alberta 59: Karnick James had 16 as B.C. had five scorers in double figures.

Max Russell had 15 for Alberta, 0-2.

 

Under-15

Benjamin Datro, Richard Kwakwah and Leonardo De Conick each scored 12 points as second-seeded Quebec defeated third-seeded Nova Scotia 76-63.

Nova Scotia guard Mahamed Abukar had 15 points to lead all scorers. Demeric Mercer added 10.

Dondre Reddick had nine points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Nova Scotia trailed by 13 early but played Quebec even from there.

New Brunswick 96, P.E.I. 53: Marc Hofer and Adam Lambert had 17 each for New Brunswick.

Isaac Cheverie had nine points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Saskatchewan 68, Newfoundland and Labrador 47: Alexander Dewar had 25 points for Saskatchewan, including four-of-eight from three-point range.

Liam Chislett topped Newfoundland and Labrador with 14.

Ontario 93, Manitoba 49: Jaden Bediako had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead top-seeded Ontario.

Tiernan Marshall had 11 points for Manitoba.

B.C. 78, Newfoundland and Labrador 44: Michael Wilkinson and John Sunga each had 13 for B.C.

Chislett hooped 16 for Newfoundland and Labrador, which lost its second game of the day.

Alberta 114, P.E.I. 27: Jaden Matthews had 20 and Alex Jap 17 for Alberta.

Logan Cameron had eight for P.E.I., 0-2.
