On Court - Willetton Referees

The Willetton Basketball Referee Program is one quite unique to Western Australia. We are one of the only associations who has dedicated staff to teach the new referees beginning their journeys, along with one the largest group of referees. A number of our referees who have come out of our program have gone into specialist programs, and represented Willetton at the higher levels of basketball, including WABL, Championship/D-League, and NBL1. The program spans through the junior domestic competition to the senior competition. We believe that every person is different, that everyone learns at different speeds and in different ways. As an Association we don’t provide timeline restrictions on people to become a WBA qualified referee.

ONLY stadium staff may make contact with these referees as they are beginners and learning. These Referees may be accompanied by a referee (shadowing or close by) or be officiating by themselves with a co-official at the other end of the court. Association Beginner referee (White Shirt)

Exclusive to Willetton, the WBA white shirt referee is a level in our referee training program.

Spectators are not to engage with these referees, coaches may ask to speak with or ask questions during games breaks (time outs, half time) if there is no striped referee on the game.

Level 1 Referee or higher (Black and White Striped shirt)

These Referees are the next level up from an Association Beginner Referee (white shirt). Their level of qualifications in officiating Basketball varies.

Coaches may ask to speak with or ask questions during game breaks. This includes and timeouts and half time.

Game supervisor (Bright green shirt or jumper with SUPERVISOR on the back)

Coaches and managers must make first contact with supervisors when raising queries and concerns.

Spectators can approach and speak with a supervisor when available to ask quick questions, the supervisor may choose to direct the person to the Court duty manager if they are busy or the query is not relevant to them.

Referee Educator (Navy blue shirts with Referee Program on the back)

These are Referee Educators who are there to teach the Runner Referees (Green shirt) how to officiate a game of basketball.

Referee educators are NOT points of contact for teams or spectators, they are on court to educate runners and assist referees.
