The Minnows were one of the invited classes at the ISAF World Cup event in Melbourne and this year it was held at St Kilda, which had the attractive backdrop of the city skyline.
Sixteen minnow sailors took part in the four day regatta representing McCrae, Safety Beach, Parkdale and Blairgowrie clubs. The conditions were mostly excellent with 10-15 knots on the Thursday and Saturday, and about 10 knots on the Sunday. Friday saw strong winds which moderated briefly to about 17 knots as the Minnows headed out. However 15 minutes into their race a 30 knot rain squall hit the minnow fleet and flattened most boats, another 40 knot squall hit soon after which saw most of the fleet having to be rescued. Six sailors somehow finished the race in these conidtions! Thanks to all those who assisted the kids and ensured they returned safely to shore.
The racing was close but in the end the top three were Kate 1st, Anna 2nd and George 3rd. Well done girls! Full results are here. The regatta was excellent experience and fun for all involved, and terrific preparation for the Nationals just 2 weeks away.
