BAYSWATER City joined the elite list of teams to have won senior Western Australian league championships with unbeaten records when they scooped the NPLWA crown in 2015.
From their 22 games, City won 19, drew 3 and lost none. They accumulated 60 points to take the title by 10 points from second-placed Perth SC.
Bayswater also became the first team in WA's top-flight competition to record 60 points in a league season. The previous record was held by Floreat Athena after they hit 58 points in their 2007 championship win. Athena also got to the same figure in 1997. However, that was a 14-team league which had four extra games.
The only other clubs to have claimed top-flight league crowns with unbeaten records since the sport became semi-professional in 1960 are: Perth Azzurri (1967, 1981), Floreat Athena (1990 as home-and-away champions and 2007), East Fremantle Tricolore (1964) and Spearwood Dalmatinac (1982).
To make 2015 an extra special season for Bayswater City, their Colombian marksman Gustavo Giron Marulanda won the NPL Golden Boot with 22 goals, coach Chris Coyne (the former Socceroos defender and Hall of Fame inductee in 2016) was named NPLWA Coach of the Year - and the championship was their third league title in a row.

Five-star Bayswater City wrapped up an unbeaten PS4 National Premier Leagues WA season with a dominant 5-1 win over Stirling Lions at Frank Drago Reserve. An unprecedented achievement from the hosts was all but wrapped up by half time as Gustavo Giron Marulanda struck twice inside the first 12 minutes. David Heagney came off the bench to strike a late brace after goals from Brian Farrell and a consolation in between from Brodie Martin.
But it was Marulanda’s brace that set the ball rolling and the goals ensured he finished ahead of Cockburn’s Rory Patterson as the Golden Boot winner. “I told to the boys today ‘keep in mind that I need to score some goals today because Rory (Patterson) is a great finisher,” said the Colombian striker. “You’re always going to get chances with the players we have in our team, so you have to be sharp and prepared to score. Being top-scorer was one of my targets and to achieve it is a great feeling, but to contribute to the team is the best feeling.”
Marulanda also said the team acknowledged the importance of putting on a show for the fans after the previous week’s draw against Armadale. “It was frustrating to see how we played last week, but today we knew if we wanted to celebrate properly we had to win and show what we can do,” he said. “It’s been an incredible year. We’ve set the standard and to win it without losing, it’s excellent.”
The league’s top scorer took less than a minute to put one hand on the Golden Boot, capitalising on an error at the back to slide past Joel Driscoll. It was 2-0 inside quarter of an hour. Marulanda this time latched onto a ball over the top, rounding Driscoll and slotting into an empty net.
Bayswater coach Chris Coyne praised his leading scorer for his efforts this season. “The kid has got so much ability, his two finishes were great and he could have had three or four,” he said. “He has pace and lightens everything up as soon as he gets on the ball. He’s a joy to coach and watch and he’s been phenomenal for us this season.”
The pace of Teeboy Kamara on the break provided the most danger to Bayswater’s defence, but Stirling’s closest attempt of the half was a free kick curled inches wide by Miki Vujacic. Bayswater were largely in control, though, and that dominance continued into the second half when Farrell stooped to head in Sam Mitchinson’s cross. Stirling’s consolation unsurprisingly came from the left, as Martin was on hand to ensure the hosts wouldn’t keep a clean sheet. Heagney replaced Marulanda with 18 minutes to play and made an immediate impact when he fired a spot-kick into the bottom corner after Steve Purton harshly saw red for handball. And he’d have the final say in the dying minutes with a powerful run down the left and an emphatic finish at the near post to match.
Coyne was full of praise for his squad and their achievements this season. "We asked the boys to go out and show why they are champions and they did that today,” he said. “Some of the football they played was fantastic."
