Vale Giuliano Cantoni, one of Bunbury's best

GIULIANO Cantoni, one of WA football's great multi-taskers and a popular choice when he was inducted into the Hall of Recognition in 2012, has died. He passed away on Sunday, March 3, aged 71.
Born in Tuscany, Italy, in 1948, the super-enthusiastic Giuliano came to Australia at a young age and played in goal for Perth Azzurri in the Night Series at the age of 19.
After work commitments took him to Bunbury, he became player-coach with Bunbury Tricolore and later Bunbury City, leading them into the Perth semi-pro league.
Giuliano played until he was 50 and then took to refereeing, officiating games in Perth and across the south-west for over seven years.
One of the highlights of his refereeing career was being assistant referee for the Young Matildas-China game of 2004.
He was a familiar face around the grounds in later years as a referee's inspector and he was also a keen Perth Glory supporter
Hall of Fame Committee chairman Louis Prospero, who was a colleague of Giuliano's in his refereeing days, said: "On behalf of the Football Community and the Football Hall of Fame WA, we are very sorry to hear of the loss of Giuliano.
"I recall the night that Giuliano was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 2012, he was so proud and deservedly so.
"More recently I had seen him regularly at the Perth Glory games and he told me that he wasn’t well.
"Our thoughts and prays are with Giuliano's wife and family."
Giuliano's wife Shelley said: "Thank you for all of your help over the years. He was a true soccer supporter of all aspects of the game."
