FOOTBALL West has launched its referees recruitment campaign for 2019 with a slick promotional video inviting football lovers to “Come On – Give It A Go”.
The number of referees and assistant referees continues to grow in both metropolitan and regional WA and Football West Manager of Referees Eddie Lennie believes stocks will rise further next season on the back of the campaign.
“The launch of the recruitment campaign is a great initiative and we hope it will result in more referees becoming available for all levels of competitions in 2019,” said Lennie, who is a former World Cup and Olympic Games referee and an inductee in the Football Hall of Fame WA.
“As well as the release of the new video, there will be printed material and posters to be distributed to the clubs.
“Last season we increased our overall total of referees by 13%, bringing the number up to 544 in metro area and 123 in the regions.
“With our initiative of female only referee courses we also had at total number of female referees increase to 49, which was a 24% increase in metro area.”
Football West will conduct introductory Level 4 referee courses throughout 2019 to help more people become match officials. The courses in January are fully booked but there are openings on courses in February, Match, April and May.
