Can Perth throw title race wide open?

Murdoch University Melville and Perth SC are gearing up for the biggest game so far of the 2020 NPLWA Women’s season when they meet on Friday night.

Victory for MUM FC will send the league leaders side six points clear at the top with four matches remaining.

However, if Perth can reverse their Round Three loss to Peter Rakic‘s side, they will go level on points with their rivals and set up a thrilling final month to the campaign.

MUM FC haven’t been beaten since their opening round defeat to Balcatta and, a goalless draw at Fremantle City aside, have scored for fun including another five last Sunday against Curtin University.

Strikers Kat Jukic and Ellie La Monte lead the scoring charts with 11 goals and seven, respectively, and both were on target in MUM FC’s 3-2 win over Perth at Dorrien Gardens in July.

The Azzurri might not be as prolific but Danielle Brogan’s battlers have refused to go away. They have won their last three, including tight games against Hyundai NTC and Fremantle, and if they can extend that run on Murdoch’s synthetic surface on Friday then the title race will be well and truly on.

Another side with an interest in tonight’s fixture are Northern Redbacks who, should Perth triumph, can get themselves back in the frame with a win against Fremantle at Hilton Park on Sunday.

Redbacks have lost only twice this season, the same as Perth. However, their challenge has been frustrated in two of the past three games by conceding late equalisers against Curtin and Balcatta. If results go in their favour this week they could move to within four points of top spot.

For Fremantle, the focus results-wise will be making sure they secure a spot in the Top Four Cup and they looked back to their normal selves last week in defeating NTC 2-0.

That win lifted them a point above Balcatta and NTC, who are both at home on Sunday. NTC take on bottom club Subiaco at Celebration Park, while Balcatta face Curtin at Grindleford.

All of the NPL Women's Round 10 matches will be live streamed on Football West's Facebook and YouTube pages.
