Redbacks second after fine win

Round-up by Tommy Doleman

Lauren Continibali's stunning first goal of the season gave Northern Redbacks a 1-0 win over Perth SC and moved them up to second in the NPLWA Women's league.

Perth started brightly at Dorrien Gardens as Abbey Meakins fired narrowly wide from distance, but the visitors gained control and made the breakthrough on 27 minutes.

Winger Continibali collected a pass into the channel before skipping beyond two defenders and firing across Rebecca Bennett and into the far corner.

Kim Carroll’s free-kick sailed just over the bar leading into half-time, but the second period would prove difficult for both sides as wet and windy conditions worsened.

Perth came close to drawing level when a set-piece fell to Toni Walden, whose goalbound effort was cleared away by the desperate Redbacks defence.

Redbacks had an opportunity to make the game safe late on, but Kizanne Mulder’s shot was straight at Bennett.

It mattered little as the Redbacks held firm to keep a third clean sheet of the season and move above the Azzurri in the league, five points behind leaders MUM FC.

Sunday’s other fixture between Balcatta and Fremantle City at Grindleford Reserve fellvictim to the weather, with the match postponed due to an unfit surface.

Attention will now to the Round Seven fixtures this Sunday, with Northern Redbacks welcoming Curtin University to Kingsway Reserve, while Fremantle City plays host to league leaders Murdoch University Melville.

Meanwhile, Curtin University and Subiaco are still waiting for their first wins of 2020 after playing out a 1-1 draw at Edinburgh Oval on Saturday.

Tatiana Gonzales lit up proceedings in the sixth minute with some nice footwork on the left before curling home a superb strike which looped over Marissa Pidgeon.

Penelope Clayton attempted to lob Pidgeon from range with another effort, but chances were few and far between in a hard-fought contest.

Subiaco equalised 10 minutes into the second half when Curtin failed to clear a set-piece and Elizabeth Wallwork capitalised to score during the goalmouth scramble.

The league’s bottom two sides were unable to find a winner with a share of the points helping neither team's hopes of a top four finish.

On Friday night, MUM FC maintained their position at the summit of the NPL with a 1-0 win over Hyundai NTC.

The home side had to work hard for the three points, but Ellie La Monte's goal five minutes from time ensured a fifth consecutive win for the leaders.
