NPL Night Series: Gwelup set to close out qualification

Football West News

Gwelup Croatia can confirm their place in the NPL Night Series semi-finals on Friday when they meet Sorrento at Dorrien Gardens.

Mathematically, the Pool Two leaders still need a point to be guaranteed of joining Floreat Athena and Perth SC in the last four.

The reality is their superior goal difference will see them advance, even if they lose to the group’s bottom team.

Gwelup this week announced the signing of Ndumba Makeche from Malaysian side Penang FA. The Zambia-born striker was previously on Perth Glory’s books and played in the NPL for Stirling Lions and Inglewood United.

Perth Glory or Inglewood will, in all likelihood, accompany Gwelup into the knockout stage. They both play on Saturday.

Glory are currently in second place, on the same points as Inglewood but four goals better off. Glory face Armadale at Dalmatinac Park, while Inglewood take on Balcatta at Frank Drago Reserve.

Floreat and Perth SC, the two qualifiers from Pool One, meet at Dorrien Gardens on Friday with top spot to be decided.

Holders Floreat, with a 100% record, are two points in front of their rivals.

The other games in the pool are on Saturday – Bayswater City face ECU Joondalup at Frank Drago Reserve, while Cockburn and Rockingham clash at Dalmatinac Park.

Frank Drago Reserve will host the two semi-finals, on Saturday, 29 February.

The final is at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium, home of Inglewood United, on Saturday, 7 March. This will form part of a double-header with the final of the Women’s NPL Night Series.
