There was plenty of excitement on Sunday night for the first games in the NPLWA – Women’s Night Series and they didn’t disappoint.

At Dorrien Gardens, home side Perth SC went down 2-1 to Subiaco before Fremantle City beat Hyundai NTC 4-0.

Meanwhile, Balcatta spoiled the party at Edinburgh Oval by defeating hosts Curtin University 2-0. Then Murdoch University Melville downed Northern Redbacks by the same scoreline.

Subiaco struck first in the Group A opener through Siobhan Mullooly on 30 minutes. Charlotte Hislop levelled for the Azzurri 10 minutes into the second half. However, Subi soon restored their advantage thanks to Jennifer Walsh and that goal proved enough to take the three points.

It was more one-sided in the second match at Dorrien Gardens, where Fremantle City had too much for a Hyundai NTC side shorn of a number of their squad because of Perth Glory commitments. Georgie Ireland, Mikayla Lyons (2) and Annabelle Leek scored for City.

Balcatta made it a winning start against Curtin Uni in Group B with second half goals from Alanah Veroni and Christiane Astorp.

That match was followed by the clash between Murdoch University Melville and Northern Redbacks. After a goalless first half, Rachel Gillies netted for MUM on 63 minutes. Ten minutes later, Ellie La Monte, who scored in Queens Park’s Night Series final victory over Redbacks last year, ensured her side would make a winning start to the 2020 competition.

RESULTS

Group A
Perth SC 1-2 Subiaco
Murdoch University Melville 2-0 Northern Redbacks

Group B
Curtin University 0-2 Balcatta
Fremantle City 4-0 Hyundai NTC
