Clubs remember Dylan once more

Football West News

The first DT38 match of the season takes place on Saturday as WA football once more remembers Dylan Tombides.

The National Premier Leagues WA fixture between Stirling Lions and Perth SC at Macedonia Park (3pm) sees two of the late forward’s clubs come together and remember a talented player who was taken far too soon, aged just 20.

It will be five years next month that Dylan died, nearly three years after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Mexico.

On Saturday there will be a minute’s applause on 38 minutes of the Stirling-Perth match – the number Dylan wore at West Ham. The east London club retired the number after his passing.

In 2015 the DT38 Foundation was set up by Dylan's mum Tracy Tombides in the UK, in memory of Dylan. It aims to raise awareness and change the stigma associated with men’s health issues with a focus on testicular cancer. After a successful launch in the UK, DT38 went on to launch in Australia.

And Football West will be working closer than ever with the charity after Head of Member Services Alex Novatsis was recently invited to join the committee of DT38 Australia.

Mr Novatsis said he was honoured to be involved with such a good cause.

“This is very close to me because I was team equipment manager with the Olyroos squad that Dylan was playing with,” he said.

“Football West will be holding a DT38 Round in Round 13, to coincide with when Perth and Stirling meet again. It will go right across the NPL and will involve a huge awareness campaign.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to ensure all players, referees and club officials are aware of the great work DT38 are doing.

“They are saving lives of young men. It’s as simple as that. And I will ensure I do all I can to try and eliminate situations that Dylan and many other young males have had to go through.”
