A missed penalty and a last-minute winner for Bayswater City left Subiaco deep in the relegation mire on Saturday afternoon.

Captain Trent Kay headed home in the 90th minute at Frank Drago Reserve to end City's run of six consecutive defeats.

The late winner came when Kay got on the end of a long free-kick and outpaced his marker to head in and reignite his side's top four chances.

Subiaco were extremely unlucky to not claim at least a point. They had the majority of the chances, including that missed penalty from David Perich midway through the second half.

The defeat leaves Subiaco second from bottom of the table with relegation looming with only three matches left in the season.

The win for Bayswater means they are just one point behind fourth-placed Inglewood United.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne admitted his side didn’t deserve to win and praised Subiaco’s efforts.

“I thought we robbed Subiaco to be honest, I thought they were excellent today,” he said.

“We only had the one real chance in the game so I’m pleased for the boys because they’ve worked hard, but I’m also disappointed for Subi because they worked their backsides off today.”

Subiaco assistant coach Basil Lenzo said he was disappointed with the result given how well his side played.

“We put in a massive shift and just a really basic mistake cost us. It's gut-wrenching.” he said.

The one positive news for Subiaco was that the teams immediately above them - Forrestfield, Stirling and Balcatta - also lost.

The first half was a scrappy affair from both teams in wet and windy conditions and chances were few and far between.

Subiaco had the best of the opening half in the 34th minute after Perich played a great long ball to Anthony Topino, who cut inside on the left but his curling effort edged wide of the far post.

Bayswater struggled to impose themselves and Subiaco’s greater intensity made it look as though the hosts would be facing yet another defeat.

The away side again had a great chance to take the lead in the 61st minute after Mitchell Bath’s cross found Perich in the centre but his half volley whistled wide.

A breakthrough looked like it would finally come in the 63rd minute after Ian McMurray was brought down in the box by Kay and the referee pointed to the spot.

Perich stepped up to take the penalty but drove his low effort.

In the 71st minute it looked like Perich would make up for his penalty miss when his chipped header over Bayswater keeper Dejan Aleksic was on target, but Todd Howarth rushed back to clear it off the line.

It looked as thugh Subiaco were going to have to settle for a point yet they didn't even get that after Kay struck at the death.

With three games remaining Bayswater’s top-four chances remain alive but they will need to rely on the teams above them slipping up.

Coyne added: “The form we’re in at the moment I don’t think we deserve to be there, but we’ll keep working hard and see.”

Subiaco remain in 13th with their survival chances on the line next week as they face 12th placed Forrestfield in a game neither side can afford to lose.
