Azzurri suffer late setback against Subi

Report by Tristan Wheeler

Perth SC missed a great chance to move to within six points of the top of the NPL WA after they conceded a last-minute equaliser away to Subiaco on Saturday.

Perth started quickly and were handed the lead after Paul Zimarino scored in the 12th minute. The Perth attacking midfielder, who grabbed the winner against Floreat last week, was played through from midfield and sent his shot high into the top corner.

But having been unable to find a killer second goal, Perth paid a heavy price when Matthew Clark was on hand to level as Subi moved up to ninth on the table.

Subiaco might have equalised sooner but player-coach Ian MacMurray was adjudged offside on 20 minutes.

Perth continued to attack and generated numerous corners. They should have doubled their advantage in the 29th minute but Niccolo Sabitini could only hit his shot lamely at Subiaco keeper Ryan Montgomery.

The second half saw Subiaco begin to work their way into the game, generating more pressure and starting to push back against Perth’s dominance.

They showed their first sign of life in the 58th minute, when a mis-hit cross forced Perth Keeper Francis Soale to tip the ball over the bar.

Subiaco still had to endure plenty of Perth pressure during the second half and substitute Gustavo Catarcione nearly put Perth two up, having a low two poke pushed wide by Montgomery.

But Subiaco were far from out of it and in the 90th minute they finally found an equaliser. Soale could only parry a hard shot from Anthony Topini into the air and Clark found himself on the end of the rebound to equalise for Subiaco.

McMurray said: "We showed great character last week against Joondalup United to come back and we did the same again today. The boys worked extremely hard. I told the boys beforehand that we have to believe in ourselives and we did that for the 90 minutes today."

Perth coach Ramon Falzon said the Azzurri had only themselves to blame.

“I don’t think its bad luck, I think it’s our fault. When you dominate the game for so long in possession you need to translate it into chances and into goals," he said.
