Glory hammer 'shocking' Joondalup

Report by Dennis Gedling

Perth Glory moved into second spot on the National Premier Leagues WA table after they thrashed Joondalup United 5-0 on a cold, windy day at Percy Doyle Reserve.

In a performance Joondalup coach Nick Jennings descrbed as "shocking all round", Glory were never troubled as they eased to the win.

It didn’t help that United's Fraser Garnaut appeared to pull a hamstring only a few minutes into the game and had to be replaced. The league's bottom club held up well in the initial stages but the visitors soon dominated.

Yacoub Mustafe was first to test Joondalup keeper James Bosdet when he danced through the home defence only to be brilliantly denied. A few minutes later, however, it was 1-0 for Glory when powerful striker Michael Domfeh beat the offside trap and lashed the ball from a close angle, the pass from captain Michael McDougall a peach.

From here Glory dominated and had their second goal on 31 minutes after Callum Timmins’ deflected shot wrong-footed Bosdet and hit the back of the net. There was another on 40 minutes when Luca Bodnar scored a fine goal and at half-time it was 3-0.

In the second half Glory again flexed their muscle against an out-of-sorts United side chasing shadows. On 56 minutes it was 4-0 when Henry Hore shot hard and low to the keeper’s right. Bosdet was unable to get down and keep the shot out and perhaps could have done better.

Chok Dau went inches wide for Glory before frustration came to the surface for United with captain Anthony Taylor’s harsh tackle resulting in a yellow.

The only bit of resistance from United was a shot easily saved by the young keeper Jackson Lee but Glory never let them have another sniff. More shots came but screwed just wide before a final goal right on 90 minutes from the sub Gomo Dukuly who waltzed in to the penalty area and finished a simple goal.

After the game Glory coach John Gibson was delighted with his young charges.

Gibson said: "The plan was to get the job done and well done to the boys because they followed the process and it could have been more.

"We had a 17-year-old in goals and a 17-year-old playing at right-back and it’s good to see we’ve got some good depth to keep the momentum going.”

Joondalup United coach Jennings was despondent with his side after the loss.

He said: “It was our worst performance of the season. Not one player could say they did what they were asked and I was embarrassed by that team performance.

"Not one member of the team showed a high standard today.”

Next week United have to regroup and play Subiaco, while Glory take on Forrestfield at Ashfield.
